Tomasz Piwonski
Tyndall is a leading European research centre in integrated ICT (Information and Communications Technology) materials, devices and systems. It is one of Ireland’s five National Labs, specialising in both electronics and photonics. Tyndall works with industry and academia to transform research into products in its core market areas of electronics, communications, energy, health, agri-tech & the environment. With a network of over 200 industry partners and customers worldwide, they are focused on delivering human and economic impact from excellence in research. A research flagship of University College Cork, Tyndall is home to a research community of 600 people of 52 nationalities. Dr Tomasz Piwonski is an expert in fabrication and advanced characterization of III-V photonic devices including tunable lasers for Optical Coherence Tomography. He has experience with numerous advanced experimental techniques such as ultra-fast pump-probe spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and time-resolved photoluminescence. He was also involved in studies on semiconductor swept-source lasers for Optical Coherence Tomography applications (SFI/CDA/2016 grant). He has been involved in collaborations with other universities and with industry partners on multiple national and EU projects. He has published 31 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. The aim is to improve the beam quality of the output beam based on the characteristics of the output beam of the QCL. Tyndall will develop and refine a new fabrication process to realise polysilicon and germanium metasurfaces on transparent free-standing dielectric membranes. The process will be based on Deep Ultra-Violet lithography and the metasurfaces will be designed to be compatible with the process’ resolution. The divergence angles of the excitation laser will be determined and the metalens design adjusted to provide collimation or focusing and the desired beam diameter. TNI has its own world-class facilities including the only full silicon CMOS, MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) and III-V semiconductor wafer fabrication research facilities and services in Ireland. Tyndall researchers are experts at designing, miniaturising and product prototyping of various photonics devices. Evoque
